Winter Hand Balm

DIY Winter Hand Balm for dry chapped hands | Mossy Meadow Farm

Yup. I realize it’s March and I should probably be posting more springy type recipes. However, winter always seems to have a mind of its own, so winter it still is! At least so say my dry hands.

It goes without saying that drinking extra water is definitely #1 when it comes to dry skin. Working with the body from the inside out is very important. However, skin also benefits from soothing balms and creams externally as well. So today I’m sharing this lovely winter hand balm that nourishes and moisturizes. Feel free to cater the essential oils to your preference if you wish.

Ingredients

  • 55 grams coconut oil

  • 30 grams shea butter

  • 11 grams beeswax

  • 4 grams castor oil

  • 6 drops frankincense essential oil

  • 6 drops palmarosa essential oil

  • 20 drops grapefruit essential oil

  • 5 drops orange essential oil

  • 5 drops rosemary essential oil

Directions

In a double boiler gently melt the coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax together. Stir occasionally. Remove from the heat and stir in the castor oil.

Carefully drop in the essential oils, mix well, and pour into glass or metal jars or tins. Allow the balm to cool until completely solid. Label and you’re ready to use it!

**If you do not own a double boiler, never fear! Simply fill a small pot with a couple inches of water, and set a glass jar in the water. Add your ingredients to the glass jar, bring the water to a simmer and the ingredients will start to melt together.

Because this recipe contains no water there is not need for a preservative and it should last for quite some time.

If you are unable to grow your own herbs, or find ingredients locally, then here are two of my favorite places to buy bulk ingredients:

This company is where I purchase the majority of my seeds. Great selection of heirloom and/or organic seeds:

These are hands down my favorite seed starting trays and pots. These are heavy duty and don’t crumple when you pop your plants out! Definitely worth the investment in my opinion.
